Islington Removals Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy explains how Islington Removals manages health, safety and welfare for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. We are committed to achieving high standards of safety in every aspect of our work, from packing and loading to transport and delivery.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities. We aim to provide a safe and healthy working environment for all personnel involved in domestic and commercial removals, storage handling, packing, loading, unloading and associated operations. We will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and work continuously to improve our performance.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Islington Removals is responsible for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes allocating sufficient resources for training, equipment, supervision and risk control measures. Managers and supervisors are required to plan work with safety in mind, monitor working practices and ensure that any identified hazards are addressed promptly.
Management will review this policy on a regular basis, and whenever there are significant changes to our operations or to applicable health and safety regulations. Any updates will be communicated to employees and, where appropriate, to contractors and partners.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Islington Removals has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must follow company procedures, use equipment safely and cooperate with instructions and training provided.
Employees are expected to report hazards, near misses, incidents, faulty equipment and unsafe conditions immediately to a supervisor or manager, so that corrective action can be taken. Failure to follow safe working practices may result in disciplinary action.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments to identify significant hazards associated with our removals activities, such as manual handling, vehicle movements, working in and around properties, use of lifting equipment and handling of customers belongings. Based on these assessments, we establish safe systems of work and communicate them clearly to all relevant staff.
Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever there are changes to work processes, equipment, operating locations or legislation. Where necessary, we introduce additional control measures such as revised procedures, equipment upgrades or targeted training.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core aspect of removal services, and we recognise the potential risks of strain, sprain and other musculoskeletal injuries. We provide training on safe lifting techniques, team lifting, use of handling aids and route planning within properties to minimise manual handling risks.
Suitable equipment such as sack trucks, moving dollies, furniture blankets, straps and other securing devices are provided and must be used in accordance with training and instructions. Damaged or defective equipment must be reported and taken out of use immediately.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and are regularly inspected and serviced. Drivers are required to carry out basic vehicle checks before use and to report any defects without delay. Loads must be packed, distributed and secured safely to prevent movement during transit.
All drivers and driver assistants must follow road traffic regulations, drive responsibly and allow sufficient time for journeys to reduce pressure and the risk of accidents. Fatigue management, safe loading practices and route planning are integral to our approach to vehicle safety.
Customer and Public Safety
We take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of customers, visitors, neighbours and members of the public while we are working at homes, offices and other premises. This includes maintaining clear access routes, minimising trip hazards from packaging and equipment, and carefully coordinating vehicle movements in residential and commercial streets.
Where necessary, we will use warning signs or verbal communication to alert people to potential hazards, such as moving large items through shared entrances, operating tail lifts or manoeuvring vehicles in confined areas.
Training, Information and Supervision
Islington Removals provides appropriate health and safety training to employees according to their role and responsibilities. This may include induction training, manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety, working on customer premises and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring work on site, ensuring that procedures are followed and providing guidance to less experienced staff. We also provide ongoing information and refreshers to keep health and safety at the forefront of our daily operations.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses must be reported and recorded in accordance with our internal procedures. We investigate incidents to identify root causes and take corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Where required, we will report incidents to the relevant authorities in line with legal obligations.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, serious injury, road traffic collisions and property damage. Staff are briefed on how to raise the alarm, call for assistance and respond appropriately to protect themselves and others.
Occupational Health and Welfare
We recognise the physical nature of removals work and take steps to protect the health and wellbeing of our staff. This includes promoting safe working hours, encouraging proper use of personal protective equipment where required, and providing guidance on safe lifting and posture.
We do not tolerate harassment, bullying or unsafe behaviour. Concerns about health, safety or welfare can be raised with management without fear of victimisation.
Continuous Improvement
Islington Removals is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We welcome feedback from employees, customers and contractors on how we can enhance our safety practices. Lessons learned from incidents, inspections, audits and customer feedback are used to refine our procedures and training.
By working together and following this Health and Safety Policy, we aim to ensure that all removals and related services are carried out as safely and efficiently as possible, protecting our teams, our customers and the wider community.
